Bushwhackers Sail to Victory

Although the skies were mostly sunny and blue, due to the strong gusty winds roaring out of the north, the scores for the final night of play in the Leamington Canadian Tire Men’s Thursday Night League at Erie Shores Golf Club were the highest of the season since late May.

But that made the victory march easy for the Bushwhackers as a poor turnout made it impossible for the Duffers & Bluffers to catch them in the stretch.  The final tally for the 2018 champions was 383 points while the runner up team, the Duffers & Bluffers, finished comfortably in second place with 361.

The Screwballs hung on to third place with their season point total of 340 gave them a narrow 4 point finish over the Crazy Chryslers who finished in fourth place with 336.   The Sultans of Swing and the Shankadelics ended up being for last place with their equal point totals of 295.

The highest low gross scores of the season simply confirmed the difficulty of playing in such blustery wind conditions as Ward Hutchins was the only golfer to match par with an even par 35.  David Owens and Greg Zimney both tied for second with their 2 over par games of 37 and Tim Tiessen and Bill Ruiter finished another stroke at 3 over par 38.

The net scores were no better as only three shooters were net par or better.  Bill Plumb led the way with a 2 under par net 33, while Vic Tiessen and Vic Penner were next with their one under par net rounds of 34.   George Kir and Steven Georges finished another stroke back at net 35.

In the Skins Money Game, Kyle Humphreys easily finished the year on top with his record setting season total of $120.   Claudio Sabelli ended up in second place with his $82 tally, while Nick Sawatzky finished the season in third spot with $59.  Brian Humphreys, Kevin Bunda and Reg Morin all tied for fourth at $53 while Greg Zimney, Ralph Warkentin and Michael Taouil finished next at $51.

Morin Surges to the Top

It may be heading into late September but the hot, steamy and muggy conditions felt by all those playing in the Leamington Canadian Tire Men’s Thursday Night League at Erie Shores Golf Club this past week seemed more like the dog days of summer with the Bushwhackers and the Duffers & Bluffers continuing their blistering season-long battle for first place.

After finally moving 4 points ahead of the Duffers & Bluffers led by team captain Ward Hutchins last week, the whole League saw first hand just how resilient the D & B squad can be as they grabbed the 4 extra points needed to charge back into a first place tie with team captain Raoul Morin and his Bushwhackers crew.  What a great set-up for the final two weeks of play in this year’s edition of the Thursday Night League.

Even The Screwballs, captained by Brian Humphreys, and the Crazy Chryslers led by Mike Herbert, are still mathematically in the hunt with their third and fourth place totals of 316 and 308.  Dan Musuronchan and his Shankadelics squad are holding down fifth spot with 263 points, while the Sultan of Swing captained by Greg Dunmore are resting in last place with 249 points.

However, in the individual stats, the sticky weather seemed to slow down the League’s best players as all the top two scorers, Brian Humphreys and Raoul Morin, could do on the easier front 9 track was shoot one under par rounds of 34.   Sitting another stroke back at even par 35 was the trio of Kyle Humphreys, Mike Ferreira and Ward Hutchins.   Kevin Bunda, Neil Sawatzky, Matt Taouil and Kevin were next with 1 over par scores of 36.

In the net handicap flight, Armand Mucci, Dan Musuronchan and Kevin Bunda all tied for low with their 4 under par net rounds of 31, while Michael Taouil and Matt Quiring were a shot back at 3 under par net 32’s.   Joe Verhoeven finished next at 2 under par net 33.

It was the quietest night of the season for skins with only 5 winners in total and none from the top flight.  Gross skin winners in the second flight included Rick Bergen, Kevin Bunda and Mauro Paglione, while Dan Musuronchan and Michael Taouil each picked up a net skin in the handicap division.

In the Skins Money Game, Kyle Humphreys still has an insurmountable lead with his record setting season total of $120.   Lagging far behind in second place with $54 is Brian Humphreys.   Kevin Bunda, Reg Morin and Dave Owens are all tied for third place with $53, while Ralph Warkentin and Greg Zimney are next with $51.

Owens Ready for the Tour!

Returning to the front nine this past week, Dave Owens clocked in with the best round for individual play in the Leamington Canadian Tire Men’s Thursday Night League at Erie Shores Golf Club  by shooting a commendable 3 under par 32 which was three strokes better than the even par rounds of 35 scored by Ward Hutchins, Matt Dick, Brian Higgins and Kevin Sawatzky.

Finishing another stroke back at one over 36 was a group of seven players including Don Gemmell, Tim Tiessen, Kyle Humphreys, Bob Dick, Ryan Peltier, Geoff Dunmore and Wray Pollock.

For the skins game, in the lowest gross flight, David Owens picked up the only skin with a birdie 3 on hole #9.   In the second gross flight, two birdies were scored onholes #2 and #9 by Reg Morin, while Dennis McDonald picked up a single birdie 4 on hole #6.

In the handicap flight, a total of four net eagles were won by Nick Sawatzky, Michael Taouil, Mel Pace and Paul Bunnett-Jones on holes #1, #2, #4 and #9.

With Dave Owens securing a solo skin in the top gross flight division, he jumped all the way up to second place with $52 which still leaves him $39 behind leader Kyle Humphreys who stands alone in first with $91.

Abe Bergen now drops to third spot with $45, while Greg Zimney is next with $42. Reg Morin hopped up to fifth place with his new total of $41 that is $2 better than Ralph Warkentin who is alone in sixth spot with $39.

Anthony Andary stands alone in seventh with #38, while a group of eight players including Dennis McDonald, Peter Neufeld, John Balkwill, Tim Towle, Bill Ruiter, John Penner, Ryan Peltier and Paul Driedger are all tied for eighth place with $35.

There wasn’t much change in the ever important team standings category as the Duffers and Bluffers continue to lead the way with 261 points.   However, after remaining in second place for most of the season just points behind the leaders, the Bushwhackers have fallen 13 points behind with a new total of 248.

The Shankadelics had a big week gathering a total of 238 points to move ahead of the Screwballs who are now in fourth place with 235.  That gives them an 8 point advantage over the fifth place Crazy Chryslers who now have 227 and, seemingly,  an insurmountable lead over the last place  Sultan of Swing who now have 203 points.

Owens Laps the Field

It was back to the front nine again this past week in the Leamington Canadian Tire Men’s Thursday Night League at Erie Shores Golf Club with the team of the Duffers and Bluffers continuing to hold down first spot with 229 points which keeps them just 5 points ahead of the Bushwhackers who are tightly holding on to second place with 224 points.

The Screwballs team is hanging in strongly in third place with a total of 212 points that’s 12 points ahead of the Shankadelics who are sitting comfortably in fourth place with 200.  That’s 8 points better than the Crazy Chryslers who are sitting in fifth place with 192 and a good 19 points ahead of the bottom dwelling team of the Sultans of Swing who 173.

In individual play, lefty Dave Owens led the way with a super 3 under par round of 32 just one stroke better than Raoul Morin who coasted in with an impressive 2 under par game of 33.

Kevin Sawatzky, Ryan Harder, Mike Ferreira and Ward Hutchins also managed to break par with their 1 under par scores of 34 while Richard Lowes, Geoff Dunmore, Tim Tiessen and Kyle Humphreys finished the night with even par rounds of 35.

Tim Towle, Peter Neufeld, Matt Dick and Scott Wilkinson were next with one par games of 36 – that was still one better than Brian Humphreys one over par trip of 37.

In the Handicap division, Peter Neufeld led the way with a 4 under par net 31 which is one better that the 3 under par net 32, scored by Frank Dick, Claudio Sabelli, Raoul Morin and Ralph Warkentin.

In the Skins game, Paul Barnable, Dave Owens, Gary Bondy and Dylan Lowes all managed to pick up gross skins, while John Bergen, Roger Cote, Gary Bondy, John Vlodarchyk and Dylan Lowes each picked up net skins.

In the overall skins money list, Kyle Humphreys still leads the way with $77, with Greg Zimney alone in second place with $42.  Ralph Warkentin is next with $39 and Bill Ruiter, Greg  Zimney, John Balkwill, Ryan Peltier, John Penner, Peter Neufeld and Paul Driedger are all tied at $35.00.
